As fuel costs rise, there’s one benefit more employers are giving employees: a day off every week.

For example, Utah is out to roll out a program to let 17,000 state employees work 10-hour days Monday-Thursday and have Fridays off.

Of course, not every employer can stay open just four days a week. But the state decided it was worth a try with some government offices and will begin the program next month as the beginning of a year-long experiment.

In addition to the money the employees will save, the state estimates it’ll cut down on about $3 million worth of energy costs by closing offices an extra day each week.
