6 overlooked exit interview questions

Most HR departments conduct exit interviews with departing employees, covering only the basics about why the person is leaving. But more valuable information can be learned by adding these questions:
- Did you get adequate feedback from your manager?
- What qualities do you think someone in this position needs to be successful?
- Did you get the training and support you needed? If not, what more would you have liked to receive?
- Were there any company policies or procedures that made your job more difficult?
- What does your new employer offer (in terms of salary, benefits, etc.) that we don’t?
- What advice would you have for the next person who takes your position?
A general point to consider: The goal isn’t just to hear why the person is leaving so those problems can be avoided later. Companies should also look for any positive advice that will help in selecting and developing employees in the future.
